神戸日米協会は、日米の友好・親善に寄与すると共に会員相互の親睦を図るという目的で1908年に設立された歴史ある協会です。
　神戸港は古く「大輪田の泊」と呼ばれていた時代から中国大陸や朝鮮半島の港と交易し発展しました。鎖国政策下の江戸時代が終わり、1868年の開港後は、国際貿易港として世界を代表する港に発展し、神戸は人・物・情報が行き交うまさに国際都市として栄えてきました。イギリス、フランスなどとともに、いち早くアメリカとも通商を開きました。
　当協会はそのような神戸港が国際貿易港としてまさに発展していこうという頃に産声を上げ、全国各地の日米協会の先駆けとして設立された日米協会といっても過言ではありません。
　その後、第二次世界大戦では一時活動を休止せざるを得ませんでしたが、日本が敗戦から復興し、やがて高度経済成長を遂げるころには、会員も増加し活動が盛んになりました。
　1995年1月の阪神・淡路大震災では神戸は大きな被害を受けましたが、わずかな期間に都市の機能を復旧させました。2006年には神戸空港が開港し、神戸は海・空・陸の総合交通体系を確立し、人・物・情報の交流拠点としての役割をさらに拡大してきました。
　そんな中で神戸日米協会は、自治体、地元の民間企業、諸団体、市民の方々と、また、米国を中心とした国際各国とも草の根レベルでの交流を図りながら、神戸市、兵庫県の発展の歩みの一翼を担ってきたと思います。
　また、兵庫県下の高校生を対象とした英語暗誦大会を開催するなど、若い世代が海外にはばたき、活躍するよう応援をしています。
　今後はもっと多くの皆様に仲間に加わっていただき、この国際都市神戸と米国の関係性を姉妹都市であるシアトルを中心により一層深め、ネットワーク構築に努めて参ります。また、新たなスタイルの勉強会なども開催し、幅広い世代の方が米国で活躍できるきっかけの場となるような活動も広げていく所存でございます。皆さまの益々のご支援・ご協力をお願いいたします。

A Message from Our President

JAPAN‐AMERICA SOCIETY OF KOBE (JASK) is a historical association, which was established in 1908 for the purpose of contributing to friendship and goodwill between Japan and America, while promoting mutual friendship among members.

Kobe Port, since the time it was called “Owada no tomari,” developed through trades with ancient China and Korean Peninsula. The port reopened in 1868 at the end of Edo era, during which a national isolation policy was put in place. It has since developed into one of the key international trading ports of the world. Kobe then prospered into a true international city where people, merchandise and information came and went as it quickly started trading with Britain, France, as well as America.

JASK was established when Kobe Port was in the process of developing into an international trading port. It can be said that we set a precedent for the rest of Japan-America societies all over the country.

Although we had no choice but to take a temporary hiatus during World War II, the number of members had increased and the association became very active after Japan lost the war, reconstructed itself and went through rapid economic growth.

The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in January 1995 caused major damage to Kobe, but city functions were restored in a short period of time. Kobe Airport opened in 2006, establishing an integrated transportation system by sea, sky and land in Kobe. Since then, Kobe has expanded its role as an exchange point of people, merchandise and information.

In the meantime, JASK has played a role in the development of Kobe City and Hyogo Prefecture through grassroots interactions and communication with the local government, local private companies, various organizations and citizens, as well as international countries such as America.

We also encourage the young generation to succeed in the world by hosting an English recitation contest for high school students in Hyogo.

From now on, we would aim to invite more and more participants to join us and further deepen our cordial relationship between the cosmopolitan city of Kobe and the United States, especially with a focus on our sister city of Seattle, for the purpose of forming a network.

We also intend to expand the contents of our activities including new styles of a seminar to provide opportunities for people of a wide range of generations to become active in the United States. We greatly appreciate your support and cooperation.
